‘Curiouser and curiouser’, said Michael.

Michael has always been curious. By the age of ten, he was breeding tropical fish, gardening, doing needlework and, of course, drawing. He found that – through simple gestures, by exploring, and with consistent work – the everyday could become extraordinary

In 2010, he founded Chandler House in Cape Town. It quickly became a place for experiments, objets, antiques, art and whimsy. Not only does Chandler House offer products designed exclusively by Michael, it is also his studio, a destination boutique stuffed with glorious homeware, and a gallery for other artists and designers. A home as well as a house.

Michael’s work has appeared at the National Gallery in South Africa, at the Grande Palais in France, and on building-sized murals from Miami to Morocco. His collaborations include work with Standard Bank, Mr. Price, Dubai-based Mirzam, and the Robertson Small Hotel. You will also find Michael’s handmade, individually commissioned platterware on tables in Norway, the USA, Singapore…

Michael is a self-taught artist, curator, illustrator, and ceramicist – and plans to keep learning. With ink and paper, with cobalt blue on porcelain, with doodles, dreams and his dog, named Pogo.

The House

Through the doors of an 18th Century Cape Georgian House, in the heart of glorious Cape Town, Chandler House has made its home. The brainchild of curator, illustrator, ceramicist, and lover of all things beautiful, Mr Michael Chandler, Chandler House is the little shop come gallery that celebrates a growing family of inspiring local artists and makers.

The shop’s shelves are stocked with homeware and gifts, unique antiques, objets d’art, handwoven textiles, and a selection of artworks by established and emerging artists.

Spied through the adjoining door of the shop, the ever-evolving Voorkamer Gallery hosts monthly exhibitions by Cape artists, while a studio upstairs is where Mr Chandler handcrafts his bespoke commissions, large-scale tiled murals & intimate prints.
